Wild Camping in Greece 2025: What travelers need to know
In January 2025, Greece passed Law 5170/2025, which significantly restricts opportunities for wild camping with campers and caravans. These changes have triggered serious reactions among travelers and organizations related to alternative tourism.
What does the new law include, and what are the penalties?
Article 27 of Law 5170/2025 prohibits:
- Parking or staying with a camper or caravan in public spaces, including beaches, forests, archaeological sites, and other protected areas.
- Hosting more than one camper on private property unless it is part of a licensed camping facility.
Violators face fines starting from €300 and may be subject to up to three months in prison.
Reactions and follow-up
The Greek Camper Club (ΕΛΑΤ) expressed concerns about the implementation of the law and held meetings with the Ministry of Tourism and the General Directorate of Police Security. After these meetings, in May 2025, it was clarified that:
- Parking and stopping campers is allowed, as long as it complies with the Highway Code.
- The ban on wild camping remains in effect, but a distinction is made between parking and camping.
The Ministry of Tourism also acknowledged the need to establish special Camper Stop zones and proposed that such an initiative be taken up by the competent ministries.
Recommendations for travelers
If you’re planning a camper trip to Greece:
- Carry printed copies of:
- Law 5170/2025
- The Ministry of Tourism announcement from May 9, 2025
- The Greek Police directive (G. F./E.F. Theme 2501/5) from March 27, 2015
- Avoid camping outside licensed campgrounds.
- In case of inspection, ask for a written explanation if any sanctions are imposed.
Greece remains an attractive destination for camper travel, but it’s important to follow the new regulations to avoid trouble and fines.
Reason and responsibility on wheels
It’s worth noting that wild camping in Greece has been officially banned since 1976. For decades, however, the authorities showed tolerance, especially toward camper travelers who followed the rules and respected nature and local communities.
Unfortunately, the increasing number of abuse cases involving campers – including pollution, illegal parking in sensitive areas, and disregard for local norms – led to stricter enforcement in 2025.
The current situation demands a high level of awareness, respect, and personal responsibility from every traveler exploring Greece with a home on wheels.
If you’re planning a camper trip in Greece:
- Park responsibly and temporarily, in accordance with traffic regulations.
- Do not set up camp outside of permitted zones.
- For maximum safety and peace of mind, use licensed campgrounds or Camper Stop areas, where you’re welcome and can enjoy the country without unnecessary risk.
Let’s keep the spirit of free travel alive – with respect, mindfulness, and care for the places we love to visit.
